A typical three-seater sofa is approximately 76 inches long in exterior dimensions. A 6-foot man could not stretch comfortably on a 76-inch sofa. Then to get a longer sofa, look for a four or five-seater sofa. Buying a sofa with one arm at one end will give you the option of adding an ottoman bench at the opposite end of additional seats.
A typical seat on a sofa is approximately 25 inches to the back pillow. Many contemporary sofas are made extra depth as deep as 30 to 40 inches. Extra deep sofas, if they are long enough, can be used as a bed if they have removable rear shock absorbers. One thing to keep in mind is that low people are often uncomfortable sitting on deep sofas, so be sure to provide extra pillows that can be used to support your back.
